The miracle of spring

The miracle of spring.
Maybe spring is the most fascinating season. Nature is exploding.
Plants are coming above the ground, fresh new leaves at the trees, colored spring bulbs and flowers in the garden.
I have seen already some butterflies. Hope there is enough food enough for them in early spring.

The Camelia, Pulsatilla, Bergenia and Geum are all plants that are flowering in spring. The Camelia, Pulsatilla and Bergenia are blooming in early spring, Geum somewhat later.

Sowing the first vegetables

Last Tuesday I sowed Rucola under glass in the breeding box. I bought the seeds last year, so they are not new. I read that it is better to use new seeds every year, but I will have to give it a try.
During the knight and during cold days I put the cover over the box, so basically it’s a bit “sowing under glass”.

Saturday I also sowed loose-leaved lettuce next to the Rucola in the breeding box and broad beans and peas in the round pot. I’ve read that I should have sowed the peas earlier, in February, because they germinate best under colder conditions. I hope they will grow.

Goose berries and Currant berries

Kruisbessen Rode bessen

There is so much going on in the garden.

There are already very small berries on the goose berry bush, picture at left. And there are also very small berries at the red currant bush, picture at the right.
Actually I’m not a big fan of these berries.

The gooseberries are very sour and they have a very hard skin.  The red berries are very sour too. Last year I made jam. Now I’m trying to find a good recipe.

Yellow and white in the spring garden

The whole garden comes alive again, spring has truly begun 🙂

I suddenly saw this cute yellow and white flowers flowering in the garden. It should be some kind of bulb because I remember that I have planted bulbs at the same spot in November. But I forgot the name.
Very frustated, not knowing the name of the plant. But I took one of my garden books and I found it. They are tulips, Botanical tulips (Tulipa saxatilis), really very beautiful!

The Forsythia blooms again, always one of the first plants, shrubs that is flowering in spring.

The cherry tree is already blooming with beautiful white blossom. Soon the cherries will be eaten by the birds, before we have the chance to eat the cherries :-).

Beautiful spring flowers in the garden

The Primroses are flowering for a while now, but last week they are really coming alive, now the flowers are fully open.
The Helleborus orientalis is already flowering since December, it flowers for a long time with beautiful bell-shaped flowers.
And of course there are the blue grape hyacinths, so cute, real spring flowers.
Last autumn I planted a lot of the grape hyacinth bulbs in the border and now they are flowering with lovely blue little flowers.

Winter flowering evergreen plants

Viburnum tinus  Helleborus orientalis purpurascens

Because our garden is still “young”, we moved here about two years ago, it looks a bit empty, especially in winter.
Most of perennials aren’t visible anymore in winter.

There should be more evergreen plants and shrubs and it would be very nice to have some more plants that are flowering in winter.

Last week we bought this Viburnum Tinus. an evergreen shrub that blooms with beautiful flowers from January till May.

Helleborus orientalis purperascens is also a winter flowering plant, it blooms very long with beautiful deep purple flowers.
